Zona Health makes the Zona Plus, a handheld isometric exercise device that guides a seated, 12-minute handgrip session. The device is intended for adjunctive use in the maintenance of overall cardiovascular wellness, alongside an existing exercise routine and the care of your physician. Where the Zona Plus came from
The Zona protocol grew out of research by cardiopulmonary physiologist Dr. Ronald L. Wiley, commissioned by the U.S. Air Force to study how F-16 pilots tolerate high g-forces. Pilots gripped a rod under flight conditions, and the handgrip exercise that came out of that work became the basis for the Zona Plus. Isometric handgrip exercise has since been examined in peer-reviewed studies, which are listed on our clinical studies page. We report that research as research: it is not a claim that the device treats any condition.
How it works
At the start of every session the Zona Plus measures your maximum grip strength in each hand, then guides four two-minute holds, alternating hands, with visual and audio feedback so you stay in your personal target range. The current model, the Series 3, adds a colour display, on-device video instructions, a rechargeable battery and automatic session tracking that syncs to your secure Zona Health account. The whole session takes just under 12 minutes and involves no joint movement.
