Does Fish Oil Lower Blood Pressure?

A meta study published in the Journal of Hypertension reviewed 36 randomized trials which measured fish oil intake and its effect on blood pressure. The conclusion was that with a median dose of 3.7g/day the reduction in systolic blood pressure was 2.1 mmHg and diastolic was 1.6 mmHg. When only double blind studies were included the decreases were 1.7 and 1.5 respectively.  The study concluded, “High intake of fish oil may lower BP, especially in older and hypertensive subjects. The antihypertensive effect of lower doses of fish oil (< 0.5 g/day) however, remains to be established.”
