Doug (Good Day Health Co-host):
“If you are on needles and pins because you have a problem with your blood pressure, Dr. Ken and I have a solution. We have been talking off and on about this new product and the fellow who is responsible for it is Steve Wood who is the President and CEO of Zona health. So with all the conversation about it Ken, we thought it would be appropriate to have Steve here. I want to call him Dr. Wood. If he is not a doctor, he ought to be. Are you a doctor Steve?”

Steve Wood:
Chuckles. “No, thank you, but I am not.”

Doug:
In a jovial tone, “You can play one on the radio for a while with us, it’s okay.”

Steve Wood:
Laughing and with an air of good-humored sarcasm, “Oh, okay.”

Doug:
“So explain a little about how you came to create this thing. As I said we have been talking a lot about it, sending people online to zona.com where they can get the free 20 page high blood pressure guide. Dr. Ken, as a matter of fact, wrote the foreword to it. Why did you get involved in this?”

Dr. Ken (Cardiologist, MD, PhD, and Good Day Health Host):
“Because blood pressure is such a big problem in America and it is a preventable, treatable easy to treat problem and I want to help people avoid the number one killer, heart attacks, and the number one disabler, stroke, and also erectile dysfunction. All these problems can be prevented by getting the blood pressure under control.”

Air Force Discovery Lowers Blood Pressure!

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

From the War Room to Your Living Room:

Discover how a fighter jet led to lower blood pressure.

G-LOC?

Gravitational Induced Loss of Consciousness. This is better known as blackout and it led to lower blood pressure. It is a problem with modern fighter aircraft The F-16, commissioned by the United States Air Force, implemented a new technology that changed the maneuverability of combat aircraft. This computer-controlled technology (fly by wire) increased the ability of planes to turn, twist and perform contortions in the air. In fact pilots say that you don’t fly an F-16, but that it flies you! This all translates to a plane that increases the demand on the pilot’s body—namely blackout from G-Force. But blackout led to accidental discovery.
G-Suite and Hand Grip and an Accident

To control blackout researchers developed the G-Suit. Simply, the G-Suit helps to keep blood in the brain and from pooling in the feet. But, the F-16 was proving that it was a bit too much and more was needed. Hence our researchers were called. They increased G-Force tolerance with a computer-monitored handgrip, job done. But, they found that some of the pilots had a steady drop in blood pressure. Our researchers were able to take this data and duplicate it with lots of people, young and old. Over and over. For twenty years. The idea worked, but getting into your hand, literally, proved to be a problem.
From the size of a house to the palm of your hand.

When researchers were studying this G-Force technology in 1969 they had the new cutting edge technology of computers to help them design the perfect protocol for the Zona Plus therapy. However, these computers were huge and the technology had not been proven. Over the next three decades as computers began to shrink, researchers were able to study the Zona Plus therapy and maximize its benefits. The result was a hand held device that can be used anywhere, anytime and utilizes a therapy that reduces blood pressure on average of 27 points.

A Laugh a Day to Keep the Doctor Away?

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

The laughing Uncle Albert in “Mary Poppins” may have been onto something. Researchers are now finding scientific evidence that laughing is not only good for us psychologically, but may play a major role in blood pressure and cardiovascular health.

The University of Maryland Medical Center has been at the forefront of laughter research. Their first significant findings were presented in 2000 to the American Heart Association’s 73rd Scientific Sessions. The study surveyed a group of 300, half of whom had suffered a heart attack or had undergone coronary artery bypass surgery and the other half who were of the same age but did not have heart disease. The two questionnaires featured either multiple choice or true/false questions to determine the participants’ likeliness to laugh in situations and their levels of anger and hostility. You can take a sample survey here. Their findings revealed that those with a history of heart disease were 40% less likely to laugh than those without the disease.

The second major study by the University of Maryland presented in 2005 focused on monitoring changes in the blood vessels, specifically the endothelium (inner lining), as participants experienced different emotions. When the volunteers were shown intense and stressful clips of movies their blood vessels reduced blood flow (called vasoconstriction) by an average of 35%. However, when participants viewed clips of a funny film, their endothelium dilated and expanded to increase blood flow an average of 22%. Further research in 2008 found that during laughing the participants’ mean flow-mediated dilation was 19%. It is believed that an unhealthy endothelium is the first step in developing hardened arteries (atherosclerosis). The study showed that laughing may help keep the endothelium healthy which should theoretically improve one’s defense against heart disease and high blood pressure.

“The magnitude of change we saw in the endothelium is similar to the benefit we might see with aerobic activity, but without the aches, pains and muscle tension associated with exercise,” said Dr. Miller, who led the research and is director of preventive cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center, “We don’t recommend that you laugh and not exercise, but we do recommend that you try to laugh on a regular basis. Thirty minutes of exercise three times a week, and 15 minutes of laughter on a daily basis is probably good for the vascular system.”
