Oral potassium intake has been shown to lower blood pressure in meta analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials featuring a total of over 2,600 participants.
The initial analysis revealed that potassium supplements lowered blood pressure an average of 4.44mHg systolic and 2.45 diastolic. Of the 33 qualified trials, one was then excluded from the meta analysis on the basis that its results were extreme. The remaining studies showed an average and statistically significant drop in systolic blood pressure of 3.11mmHg and diastolic of 1.97mmHg.
The meta study was published in 1999 and titled “Potassium in preventing and treating high blood pressure”.
